Taking it Outdoors 2024 (TIO)

A project of Arts of Point Richmond (AOPR)

In 2019 AOPR members Sharon Goods and Kenoli Oleari approached the AOPR Leadership Team with an idea for making large format vinyl banners using the artwork of AOPR members and hanging the banners outdoors in downtown Point Richmond.

One year, much work, and a pandemic later, Taking It Outdoors (TIO) came to life. AOPR members art enlarged and printed on 40 inch vinyl banners appeared on walls, windows, gates and fences in downtown Point Richmond. In the 4 years since the first banners were hung in Point Richmond, the project has evolved into an iconic annual Point Richmond event. This year's installation consists of 98 banners from Point Richmond artists of all ages.

Student Art

In 2021 art created by students at Washington School -- the dual emersion English/Spanish elementary school in Point Richmond -- was added to the project. Now, each year student banners addressing an important social and cultural issue join other local artists work on the walls of Point Richmond and Taking it Outdoors Kids (TIO-Kids) came to life. This year students explored the complex personal, social and cultural meanings of the theme: KINDNESS. Student banners add a visually powerful and delightfully insightful and inspiring element to Taking it Outdoors.
